Department Seminars

Department Seminars: a PhD Course

The Department of Chemistry Seminars are mandatory for all PhD students enrolled in the Chemistry programme. There will be ~8 main seminars (approx. 1 hour) per year. The main seminars will be followed by a Q&A session led by the host (and host PhD students)

The seminars also constitute the basis for a PhD course where you can earn ECTS points:
Earning ECTS points is determined by how many hours you spend on lectures. 1 ECTS point is granted for each unit of 25 hours spent.  The hours are ‘earned’ in the following way.

- One Chemistry Department seminar incl. Q&A:  4 hours
This is given for attending the main seminar (1h) and the following discussion/question session (1h) and for 2 hours of preparation – spent on reading literature provided by the speaker and formulating questions to the speaker.

- Winter Meeting, Department of Chemistry - attendance from 11-18 (7h)
- Specialized or Distinguished iNANO lectures (1h)
- Ole Rømer Colloquium - Department of Physics & Astronomi (1h)
- CCQ/CQOM Colloquium  - Department of Physics & Astronomi (1h)
- Kjeldgaard Lectures - Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics (1h)
- Other specialized seminar at Chemistry, iNANO, Physics, Molecular Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, Geology etc. (1h)

(attendance in master thesis defences, PhD Qualifying exams or PhD defences does not count as a seminar)

Example on earning points during one year:
All Department Seminars (incl. Q&A):   8 x 4 hours = 32 hours
Winter Meeting:   7 hours
Other lectures and seminars: 11 hours

Total:  50 hours = 2 ECTS points

Please contact Lene Conley when you have enough earned hours and want to convert them to ECTS points - a diploma can be issued.

Registration of attendance

You can register your seminar attendance here:
https://webforms.au.dk?form=2277

Please register both the mandatory participation in the main seminar and the attendance in the other seminars and Q&A to earn ECTS.

Please note:

  • Attendance in master thesis defences, PhD Qualifying exams or PhD defences does not count as a seminar, and must not be registered
  • Please do not register in advance - wait until after participation in case of cancellations, illness etc.

Mandatory attendance

Participation in the main seminars (1h) is mandatory for all PhD students enrolled in the Chemistry programme.

Participation in the following discussion/question session is not mandatory, but we encourage all PhDs to participate if possible.

However, assigned teaching duties (overlapping the seminar times) must be prioritized.

If you are abroad on courses, conferences or research stays you are also exempt, but we encourage you to participate in seminars at your host institutions on research stays.
